Pontins Prestatyn

For over fifty years, Pontins Prestatyn Sands was one of the defining features of the town's visitor economy — a large holiday camp that brought thousands of families to Prestatyn each season and underpinned local employment. It closed abruptly in November 2023. The site is large, seafront, and unresolved.

What It Was

Pontins Prestatyn Sands opened in 1971 on a substantial site at the eastern end of the town, directly behind the dunes. At its peak it was a full-service holiday camp in the British tradition: chalets, entertainment, pools, organised activities, and the particular atmosphere of several hundred families in close proximity doing the same things at the same times. It was the end of a model of British seaside tourism — Butlins, Pontins, Warners — that dominated the market from the 1950s through the 1980s before foreign package holidays eroded it.

The camp had been struggling for years before the closure. Former visitors described facilities that had not been updated since the 1990s, chalets in varying states of repair, and an entertainment offer that had not kept pace with expectations. The closure was presented as a financial decision — the camp was projected to lose money in 2024 — but the structural decline had been accumulating for much longer.

The Closure

On 30 November 2023, Pontins Prestatyn Sands closed with immediate effect. Staff were informed on the day. The timing — just before the winter break, when a seasonal closure might have been masked — and the abruptness of the decision caught many local people off guard, though the financial trajectory of the site had not been a secret. Britannia Hotels Ltd, which operated the site under a 979-year lease, cited projected financial losses.

The Current Situation

As of mid-2026, the Pontins site remains largely unused. Reports from 2024 described it as "left to rot" — overgrown, deteriorating, with no active development underway. Denbighshire County Council stated in May 2025 that it had "no current plans" to serve Britannia with a compulsory purchase order. The 979-year lease structure means the future of the site is almost entirely at Britannia's discretion.

The loss of the site is significant for Prestatyn. It represented a large portion of the town's visitor accommodation capacity, and its closure removes a visible seafront asset from the tourist economy at a time when the town is trying to emphasise its coastal and walking credentials. The Wider Pattern

The Pontins closure is part of a broader pattern. Across Britain, the traditional holiday camp model has contracted significantly: Butlins has consolidated to a handful of large modern sites; Pontins now operates a reduced portfolio. The economics of the original model — cheap, accessible, all-inclusive British family holidays — were upended by cheap flights and the package holiday industry. What remains is either the premium end (Center Parcs) or nothing. Prestatyn's Pontins was, by its final years, neither.
