Prestatyn's nightlife is honest seaside-town fare: a handful of pubs, some late-night takeaways, and the seasonal arcades on the promenade. It is not a night out destination. It is a place where a quiet drink or two is available without particular difficulty, and where the evening options have been reduced by the loss of the Pontins entertainment complex in 2023.
Pubs
The town centre has a functional selection of pubs. The Parsons Collar (Wetherspoons) on the High Street provides the usual combination of cheap drinks, basic food, and a broadly tolerant approach to who comes in. Several traditional pubs in the town centre maintain genuine local followings. For anything resembling a destination bar — craft beer, cocktails, considered wine list — Prestatyn will disappoint; travel to Llandudno or Chester.
The Pontins Absence
Pontins provided a large evening entertainment venue for the town for over fifty years — ballrooms, entertainment acts, bars with capacity for hundreds of visitors. Its closure in November 2023 removed a significant piece of the town's evening infrastructure. The gap has not been filled. The evening atmosphere on the promenade in summer is noticeably quieter than it was five years ago.
Rhyl, Eight Minutes Away
For a more animated evening out — live music, more pub options, the promenade atmosphere — Rhyl is eight minutes by train. The Pavilion Theatre in Rhyl hosts ticketed events including comedy, music, and theatre. Rhyl's pub scene, while not sophisticated, is livelier than Prestatyn's. The last train back is worth checking before committing to a late Rhyl evening.
The Promenade After Dark
The promenade at dusk in summer has its own unhurried character — ice cream and fish and chips, the sea darkening to the north, the lights of the amusements coming on. It is not dramatic, but it is genuinely pleasant in the way that only seaside resorts manage after 9pm on a calm summer evening. Walking to Barkby Beach and back in the late evening is underrated.
