Prestatyn sits within easy reach of a varied stretch of North Wales coastline. Five miles west is Talacre with its famous lighthouse. Five miles east begins the Dee Estuary. South along the coast, Rhyl's mile of promenade beach offers a different character again. This is a coast with more variety than its flat topography suggests.
Talacre Beach (5 miles west)
Talacre is Prestatyn's most dramatic nearby beach by some margin. The Point of Ayr lighthouse — a Grade II listed structure — stands in the sand at the tip of a sand spit that extends into the Dee Estuary mouth, accessible at lower tides. The walk out to the lighthouse from the car park is one of the most distinctive coastal experiences on the North Wales coast: wide sand, the estuary opening out to the south, and this Victorian lighthouse incongruously marooned in the sand. The beach at Talacre is broad, backed by dunes, and considerably quieter than Prestatyn's own beaches outside August. It is worth the ten-minute drive for the lighthouse alone.
Gronant Beach and Dunes (2 miles west)
Between Prestatyn and Talacre, the Gronant Dunes SSSI protects one of the most important little tern nesting sites in Wales. The beach here is accessible but the dunes themselves require care during the nesting season (April-August) — stay on marked paths and keep dogs away from fenced areas. Outside nesting season, the dunes and beach are excellent for quiet coastal walking with significant ornithological interest year-round.
Rhyl Beach (5 miles west)
Rhyl has a mile of beach backed by one of the more animated promenades on the North Wales coast — arcades, fish and chips, the Sky Tower beacon, and a distinctly different atmosphere from Prestatyn's quieter seafront. The beach itself is broad and clean. The two towns are eight minutes apart by train and share a coast; the contrast between them is part of understanding this stretch of North Wales.
Llandudno's Two Beaches (14 miles west)
North Shore (the main promenade beach backed by the intact Victorian seafront) and West Shore (quieter, Conwy Estuary-side, dog-friendly year-round) give Llandudno a beach offer that complements rather than duplicates Prestatyn's. Worth the thirty-minute drive or train journey for the contrast.
