Gronant

Gronant is a small coastal village between Prestatyn and Talacre, sitting behind the dunes that carry its name. The Gronant Dunes SSSI — one of Wales's most important little tern nesting sites — lies between the village and the sea. The village itself is quiet and largely residential, but its position between two of the best beaches on this stretch of coast makes it a useful base and an interesting place in its own right.

The Village

Gronant (Gronant in Welsh, the same name) is a ribbon settlement along the coastal road, with a population of around 500. It has a pub and very limited other facilities. The character is that of a coastal village that existed before the holiday trade and has accommodated it without being defined by it. The surrounding land is flat — the coastal plain between the limestone hills inland and the dune system at the shore — and agricultural.

Gronant Dunes SSSI

The Gronant Dunes stretch west from near the village towards Talacre, forming a significant dune system managed partly as an SSSI for both its plant communities and its little tern colony. The little terns — Europe's smallest seabird — nest in the open sand above the high tide line from April to August. The North Wales Wildlife Trust wardens the colony during nesting season. Outside nesting season the dunes and beach are freely accessible and excellent for walking, fossil-hunting, and birdwatching.

The Beach

The beach accessible from Gronant is part of the same coastal strip as Talacre Beach to the west and Prestatyn's beaches to the east — wide, sandy, and generally quiet compared to the main Prestatyn seafront. Dog walkers and surfers use this stretch regularly. There is beach access via the dune paths from the village; no car park directly at the beach.

Getting There

Gronant is approximately two miles west of Prestatyn town centre along the coastal A548 road. There is no direct bus service between Prestatyn and Gronant. The beach walk from Prestatyn's western seafront passes through the Gronant area after about 1.5 miles — the most pleasant approach is on foot along the beach or dune path rather than by road.
