Prestatyn is good for dogs. Barkby Beach allows dogs year-round. The Gronant Dunes and coastal walk west of town are excellent. Prestatyn Hillside is fine for dogs on leads in the SSSI areas. The Dyserth Walkway welcomes dogs. This is a town where a dog owner can have a full day's activity without significant compromise.
Beaches
Barkby Beach at the eastern end of town is dog-friendly year-round — the sailing club's working character means it has never gone in for the seasonal exclusions that the main beach requires. Central Beach has restrictions from 1 May to 30 September on the main section, but the beach area beyond the Nova Centre, heading west into the Gronant Dunes, is generally accessible with dogs outside the designated beach zones. Check current signage on arrival.
The Gronant Dunes area, heading west from the Nova Centre towards Talacre, is excellent dog walking: open dunes, wide beach, very few people outside peak season. In the nesting season (April-August) keep dogs away from the fenced little tern nesting areas at Gronant, which are marked and wardened — these birds are rare enough that dog disturbance is a genuine issue, not bureaucratic caution.
Prestatyn Hillside
Dogs are welcome on Prestatyn Hillside and the Offa's Dyke Path. The SSSI designation means dogs should be kept under close control or on leads on the limestone grassland during the ground-nesting bird season (April-July) — the rare flora is not affected by dogs but the birds are. On leads is sensible given the livestock that graze the hillside in winter months.
The Dyserth Walkway
The walkway is excellent for dogs — flat, traffic-free, varied smells, and the waterfall at the end makes a good splash and drink stop. The walkway runs through farmland at various points, so leads near fields with livestock apply. Most of the route is open enough for off-lead walking without issues.
Dog-Friendly Cafes and Pubs
Several of Prestatyn's pubs and cafes are accepting of well-behaved dogs, particularly those with outdoor seating. Ask before assuming. The seafront cafes near the Nova are the most likely to have outdoor terrace space. The Dyserth pub (The New Inn) has beer garden space and has been dog-welcoming in the past — check current policy on arrival.
